About Cindy
Cynthia Asplund Mitchell was born January 24, 1953, the daughter of a local physician. She graduated from Bloomer High School in 1971. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Nursing and graduated in 1975. She taught swimming in Bloomer, during her high school years, and continued during college. She married a Milwaukee pediatrician, Dr. Mark Mitchell in 1977. She was the mother of two children, Eric and Julia.
After graduation from nursing school, Cindy worked in a number of Milwaukee hospitals. She gradually worked her way into the teaching field, as a pediatric nursing instructor. She earned a Master’s degree in nursing from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and became an associate professor of nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1980, Cindy became ill with multiple myeloma cancer. She succombed, at the age of 33, to her disease on November 9, 1986, after many forms of treatment, including a bone marrow transplant. Cindy was a gregarious, warm, human being. She would be pleased to have her memorial touch the lives of more people in medicine, as she did in life.
